Frequently Asked Questions (Swimming Pools & Repairs)

How do I Check for a Leak

The most obvious reason for suspecting a leak is observation of a larger than normal drop in the water level.   Rule of thumb is if you are losing more than a 1/4" per day in your pool or spa, you may have a leak. What can affect your water loss?  Several things can come into play, is your pool out in the open? Is the air temperature colder than normal? Do you have a heater on the pool or spa?  These things can effect water loss.

Other Causes For Leaks:

  • Increased use of chemicals
  • Cracks in the deck from settling
  • Unexplainable water outside of the pool
  • Higher than normal water bills

Do a Bucket Test

  • Make sure the pool is full to the normal level, usually half way up the tile or skimmer opening.
  • If you have a spill over Spa, let the pool run so the spa is full to the spill over.
  • Shut the pool off
  • Fill a bucket to about an inch from the top with water and place it on the first of second step.  You can weight it down with a rock or brick if needed.
  • Use a marker to mark the outside of the bucket where the water level is and mark the inside of the bucket too
  • Be sure and check it the next day, if you have lost 1/8-1/4"  (or more), in the pool but not in the bucket, you probably have a leak and should have it taken care of.

Do I Need To Be Home for the Leak Test?

You do not need to be home for the leak test.  The technician will contact you in the morning the day of the leak test and give you an idea of what time they will arrive. You can leave a check for the amount discussed when the appointment was made or if you already have given your credit card information, we will email you a receipt. The technician will call your with the results of your leak test and what work was done.

What's Included in the Leak Test

We use special electronic audio leak detection equipment to check your entire pool including all suction and pressure lines, skimmers, main drains and lights.  We also perform a full surface inspection and finally check all your plumbing lines to determine if there are any breaks.  If needed we will pressurize the lines at no additional charge to pinpoint where the leak is and where we might have to dig to repair this leak. 90% of the time, the leak is found inside the pool or spa and can be fixed with an underwater epoxy or hydraulic cement.  If we do determine an underground repair is needed, we will give you a written quote and schedule the repair.  We also provide leak detection and locate under slabs and commercial pools.
